Harajuku is based on the real life metropolitan area of the same name in Tokyo. Much like the Harajuku, the show focuses on youth subculture and fashion trends. Most of the buildings in the show have unique architectural designs to them, such as HJ5's lounge which is a tall tower with various "kawaii" designs.
